What happens in Bali stays in Bali… unless you get a tattoo which stays with you FOREVER!!
Yes I got a tattoo in Bali. And yes, I’ve heard the horror stories of botched jobs and hepatitis B contractions but I thought, safety be damned and got it done anyway!
In truth though, and in keeping to my safety-mum mentality, I actually spent hours pouring through websites, trip advisor reviews and various forums looking for recommendations. After all of this research I was pleasantly surprised to find many tattoo parlours in Bali that are highly regarded. My choice actually came down to working out which one could fit me in that was going to be close to where I was staying.
The two clear standouts for me after visiting websites & emailing tattoo parlours were Two Guns Tattoo Bali in Kuta and Artful Ink in Seminyak and as I was heading to Seminyak later in the month I decided on this parlour. So with the appointment made I waited in nervous anticipation of the booked in date.
Stepping into Artful Ink was like walking into a trendy hipster cafe with black and gold wallpaper, funky tables with black subway tiles for the tops and an espresso machine. There was also a front desk and a golden stairway leading, not to heaven, but to what I could only assume was where the tattoo magic happened.
I was excited, so excited. I had an almost tipsy glowing feeling with only a touch of nervousness thrown in. Ricky said he’d never seen me so nervous before but in actual fact I was just buzzing with anticipation. I knew what I wanted to have stamped on me for the rest of my life, so there was no hesitation there and I have a high pain tolerance so I really wasn’t worried about the fact that it might hurt. After all what does an incy wincy tattoo needle have on childbirth?
The tattoo artist and I discussed what I wanted and he drew exactly what I had envisaged in my head but could never have dreamt of drawing myself. Then I watched as he made the area sterile, gloved up, covered everything, prepared the vegan ink and opened a new needle packet. Oh my god that needle looked huge!! Was I silly for not preparing myself for the pain? But once it was inserted into the tattoo gun it looked like a manageable size. Then it was time for the imprint of the tattoo to be placed on my wrist and to begin the piercing of my skin with the needle and the ink to take shape on my arm.
I couldn’t stop smiling like an absolute goober. This was going to look amazing.
And when it was all said and done, it did. Yes it hurt but no more than a scrape or a visit to a waxing salon. Granted the pain lasted for a bit longer (two days in fact) but it was just a light stinging sensation as if it had been scratched with something sharp, which of course was exactly what had just happened.
I was now the proud owner of a tattoo and I couldn’t stop looking at it. Artful Ink were great and I would recommend them to anyone considering getting inked in Bali.
What & Why?
So what tattoo did I get and why?
I became a de Ruyter the day that I married the guy who stole my heart but a Love will always be a part of who I am.
My maiden name is Love. My surname at birth was something else but my father wasn’t in my life an awful lot and my mother whose surname is Love was (and still is!) amazing. Therefore, I had adopted her surname early on in my life.
So Love, as a surname, kind of became a badge to me. It was part of who I was and changing it when I got married was a really hard decision that I have never felt 100% about. It was always my choice but I just never knew if it was the right one. Having ‘my badge’ tattooed on my arm now makes me feel great about that decision and I love it!
